XML Sitemap Best Practices for SEO
An XML sitemap is a direct line to search engines: "here are my pages, this is when they changed." Done right, it speeds up discovery and indexing. Done wrong, it wastes crawl budget.
The hard limits
- Max 50,000 URLs per sitemap file.
- Max 50 MB uncompressed per file.
- Over the limit? Use a sitemap index pointing to multiple sitemaps.
Include only indexable URLs
Every URL in your sitemap should return 200 and be indexable — no redirects,
no 404s, no noindex, no blocked-by-robots.txt pages. Search
engines treat dirty sitemaps as a low-quality signal.
Use lastmod honestly
<lastmod> should reflect real content changes, not template
updates. Accurate lastmod helps engines prioritize fresh content.
Where to put it
- Default location:
https://example.com/sitemap.xml— engines check here automatically. - Reference it in
robots.txt:Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml. - Submit it once in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Common mistakes
- Including every tag/filter/archive page (bloat).
- Listing the same URL with http/https/www variants (pick canonical).
- Stale sitemaps that 404 after a redesign.
- Forgetting image/video sitemaps for media-heavy sites.
